Yes, I have heard this hogwash as well & its ignorant & infuriating. Digital archives require maintenance. We cannot rely on philanthrocapitalists to stay invested.
Yes. I realize many authors associated with AI training settlements have not yet been paid. As noted in next paragraph, publishers are prone to trying to exclude authors from deals with tech companies. But some authors have been paid & some have even gotten checks above five figures (though that is exceedingly rare).
"four- and five-figure paydays for authors whose pirated works were scraped off the internet and dumped into the corpuses of commercial LLMs." We wish! Reality check! Publishers are getting the dough. For academic writers (like me) they are trying to take 90% of the settlement. I'm fighting so we'll see, but I am not optimistic.
For decades of research and many hours of writing I might get low 3 figures. The rip off of writers continues!

It has not yet led to paydays. Three of my books were scraped and they haven't sent a penny yet. They keep saying they're finalizing things.
